When you start looking into coatings, you’re going to hear a lot of conflicting information from car salesmen and auto parts stores. I want to set the record straight on what actually works.
Why Do Car Manufacturers Not Do Ceramic Coating?
Typically, no cars come from the factory with a ceramic coating. Manufacturers are focused on volume and speed. While some factory cars have better clear coats, they don’t have this level of protection.
How Long Does a Dealership’s Ceramic Coating Last?
I hear it all the time: the dealer already put a coating on. Be careful.
Many car dealerships apply ceramic coatings in their dealership. However, all they use is a spray ceramic sealant, and they trick a lot of people into buying and paying for it, and they get maybe two months of protection. If you ever get asked to do a ceramic coating at a dealership, I would say no.
Can I Apply Ceramic Coating Myself?
We advise against applying a ceramic coating yourself unless you are completely trained and certified by a manufacturer. The ceramic coating process itself all comes down to the prep of the vehicle. You can apply ceramic coating perfectly, but if the paint is not ready for it, you will not get the actual coverage and longevity that you should get.
How Much Does a 5-Year Ceramic Coating Cost?
People often ask for the price of 2-year or 5-year coatings, or how much they should charge for a 3-year coating. At my shop, we only provide lifetime ceramic coatings. A professional application is typically around $1,500. This includes the full prep, professional application, and a lifetime warranty.
How Long Does it Take for Ceramic Coating to Fully Cure?
The vehicle should not be driven for a minimum of 24 hours after application to allow the ceramic coating to fully cure. This 24-hour period is required for proper bonding and curing of the coating.
What Should You Not Do After a Ceramic Coating?
The vehicle needs to stay in the garage for 24 hours. After that, you should not wash the vehicle for a minimum of 7 days and you should try to not use your windshield wipers as long as possible. With a ceramic coating, you most likely will never need to use the windshield wipers again anyway.
